The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that Indonesia's income or economic inequality, measured by the Gini ratio, reached 0.381 points in September 2024. This figure is up from 0.379 in March 2024.
By province, DKI Jakarta ranks first as the area with the worst inequality. The Gini ratio for this province was 0.431 in September 2024, up from 0.423 in March 2024. It should be noted that DKI Jakarta is characterized solely by urban areas.
West Java follows with inequality at 0.428 in September 2024. The breakdown shows urban inequality at 0.439 and rural inequality at 0.327.
Similar figures were recorded in Yogyakarta Special Region. However, the regional characteristics differ, with urban inequality at 0.429 and rural inequality at 0.355.
South Papua (0.424) and Gorontalo (0.413) follow, calculated based on the accumulation of urban and rural areas.
Papua, West Papua, East Java, Southeast Sulawesi, and Central Java are also among the top ten highest, as shown in the graph.
Meanwhile, the lowest accumulated urban and rural inequality was in Bangka Belitung Islands (0.235); North Kalimantan (0.259); and West Sumatra (0.287).
The Gini ratio or Gini coefficient is measured on a scale of 0 to 1 point. According to the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) website, a Gini ratio of 0 points indicates perfect equality, meaning that all residents have the same per capita expenditure.
Conversely, a Gini coefficient of 1 point indicates perfect inequality, meaning only one resident has per capita expenditure, and the others have none.
"Thus, the higher the Gini coefficient, the higher the level of inequality in a region," writes Bappenas on its official website.
