January Inflation at 5.28%: These are the Contributing Expenditure Groups

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that January 2023 inflation reached 5.28% year-on-year (yoy). The highest inflation was recorded in Kotabaru (7.78%), while the lowest was in Sorong (3.23%).

BPS stated that the annual inflation occurred due to price increases shown by the surge in most expenditure group indices. Specifically, the transportation group (13.91%) and personal care and other services (6.15%).

In the food group, there was food, beverages, and tobacco (5.82%), and food and beverage services/restaurants (4.46%).

There was also household equipment, tools, and routine maintenance (4.28%), housing, water, electricity, and household fuel (3.62%), and health (3.04%).

Following these were recreation, sports, and culture (2.87%), education (2.80%), and clothing and footwear (1.07%).

"Meanwhile, the expenditure group experiencing a decrease in the index was the information, communication, and financial services group, at -0.22%," wrote BPS in its report published last Thursday (February 1st, 2023).

BPS added that the month-to-month (m-to-m) inflation rate in January 2023 was 0.34%. Similarly, the year-to-date (y-to-d) inflation rate in January 2023 was 0.34%.

Furthermore, the yoy core inflation rate in January 2023 was 3.27%. The m-to-m inflation rate was 0.33%, and the y-to-d inflation rate was 0.33%.
