Types of Health Insurance Widely Held by Indonesians in 2025

According to a report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), 78.04% of Indonesia's population will have health insurance in 2025. This percentage increased by 2.56 percentage points from 75.48% in 2024.

"This increase reflects the expanding coverage of health insurance programs, both those organized by the government through BPJS Kesehatan and those provided by private insurance and regional programs," BPS wrote in its 2025 Health Statistics Profile report.

By type, the most common health insurance among Indonesians is BPJS Kesehatan, at 73.98%.

This figure consists of 48.56% for BPJS Kesehatan premium assistance recipients (PBI) and 25.98% for non-PBI BPJS Kesehatan participants.

BPJS Kesehatan PBI is intended for low-income individuals whose premiums are paid monthly by the government. Meanwhile, non-PBI BPJS participants are required to pay their monthly premiums themselves.

Additionally, 2.64% of the population receives health insurance from their company or office.

Furthermore, only 2.63% receive Regional Health Insurance (Jamkesda), and 0.51% have private insurance.

In 2025, Aceh will be the province with the highest health insurance coverage nationally, reaching 98.74%. Jambi, meanwhile, will have the lowest, at 63.47%.

"This indicates the continued need for efforts to raise awareness and expand health insurance participation in these regions so that all residents can obtain adequate financial protection in accessing healthcare services," BPS wrote.
