Findings from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) show that 19.49% of Indonesian youth aged 16-30 years will be working as self-employed individuals in 2025. The majority, or 80.51%, will be in non-self-employed statuses.

Among those who are self-employed, a larger proportion did not complete higher education.

"When viewed by education level, a pattern emerges: the higher the education level, the lower the percentage of youth working as young entrepreneurs," BPS stated in its report Indonesian Youth Statistics 2025.

The percentage of young entrepreneurs who never attended school or did not complete elementary school reached 27.26%. This figure is more than double that of young entrepreneurs who are higher education graduates.

"This indicates that the higher a young person's education, the greater their opportunity to work in the business sector with a position/status as an employee, thus making them less interested in owning their own business," BPS said.

Young entrepreneurs who completed elementary school/equivalent also constitute a significant portion, at 27.03%. Followed by those who completed junior high school/equivalent at 23.63%, and senior high school/vocational high school at 18.72%.

Meanwhile, higher education graduates account for only 12.09%.

BPS also found that, based on the type of business, more are self-employed (13.52%), followed by those self-employed with unpaid family workers (4.64%), and those self-employed with paid employees (1.33%).

When broken down by age group, the largest proportion is aged 25-30 years (25.22%), followed by 19-24 years (14.01%), and 16-18 years (9.09%).
