Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight, Ash Reaches Approximately 500 Meters

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at 6:32 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 33 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 500 meters above the peak (1,825 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 80 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on December 28, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WIT showed 15 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 18-28 millimeters and durations of 32-79 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 17 tremor events with amplitudes of 2-16 millimeters and durations of 25-55 seconds, and 2 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-5 millimeters and durations of 108-204 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia recorded 6,145 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions with 2,527.
