Alert! Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight (Monday, April 20, 2026)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Monday (April 20, 2026) at 19:37 WIT. In the past week, Mount Ibu has erupted 5 times.

Quoting eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 500 meters above the peak (1,825 meters above sea level).

The observed ash column was gray in color with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 58 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on April 20, 2026 from 00:00-23:59 WIT showed 119 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 15-28 millimeters and earthquake durations of 34-72 seconds.

Then, 2 emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 3-8 millimeters and durations of 34-42 seconds, as well as 8 harmonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 3-10 millimeters and durations of 4-168 seconds.

PVMBG urges residents around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to carry out activities within a 2-kilometer radius and a sectoral extension of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,576 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (836 times) while Mount Ibu erupted 571 times.
