The war between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas militant group, which erupted on October 7, 2023, continues to claim lives, primarily Palestinian.
By the 37th day of the war, November 12, 2023, the number of Palestinian deaths exceeded 11,200, approximately nine times higher than the Israeli death toll.
As of November 12, 2023, reported Palestinian casualties included 11,078 in the Gaza Strip and 172 in the West Bank.
On the other hand, Israeli casualties numbered approximately 1,247. Previously, the estimated number of Israeli deaths was around 1,400, but this figure was revised downward as of November 9, 2023.
There were also approximately 27,490 Palestinian wounded in the Gaza Strip, 2,586 in the West Bank, and around 5,400 Israeli wounded.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) compiled this casualty data from the Gaza Ministry of Health and official Israeli government statements.
OCHA also reported that Israel continues to attack hospital areas in the Gaza Strip, despite this being contrary to international humanitarian law.
According to OCHA's report, the bombing and armed clashes around Shifa Hospital in Gaza City intensified since November 11, 2023. Critical infrastructure, including oxygen stations, water tanks and wells, cardiovascular facilities, and maternity wards, were damaged, and three nurses were killed.
On the same day, airstrikes reportedly destroyed a Swedish clinic in the Ash Shati camp west of Gaza City, where approximately 500 refugees were sheltering. The number of casualties in this attack remains unclear.
Then, in the night between November 11 and 12, 2023, another airstrike hit Al Mahdi Hospital in Gaza City, reportedly killing two doctors and injuring several others.
"Hospitals and medical personnel are specifically protected under international humanitarian law. They must not be used to shield military objectives from attack. Any military operation around or within hospitals must take steps to save and protect patients, medical staff, and other civilians," OCHA stated in its report on Sunday, November 12, 2023.
