Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts on Saturday Afternoon; Status: Alert

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at 11:23 WITA (West Indonesia Time). In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 38 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to reach 2,000 meters above the peak or 3,584 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level IV (Alert). Seismic observations on November 9, 2024, from 00:00 to 06:00 WITA showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 47.3 millimeters and a duration of 2554 seconds.

Then, 1 tremor with an amplitude of 14.8 millimeters and a duration of 76 seconds, and 1 distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 10.5 millimeters, S-P 27.1 seconds, and a duration of 89 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 7-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, and a sectoral 8-kilometer radius in the Southwest-Northwest direction.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 4,950 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,982 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 901 times.
