High Tuition Fees
Universities are institutions of higher education responsible for producing qualified human resources. Although Indonesia has numerous universities, not all citizens can easily access higher education. Recently, there has been widespread student complaints about increasingly expensive Single Tuition Fees (UKT).
Responding to this controversy, the Director General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Tjitjik Sri Tjahjandari, stated that higher education in Indonesia cannot yet be free like in other countries because the operational assistance for state universities (BOPTN) is insufficient to cover all operational needs.
She argued that higher education is not included in the 12-year compulsory education program, so the government prioritizes funding for compulsory education.
“What are the consequences because this is tertiary education? Government funding for education is focused and prioritized on financing compulsory education,” said Tjitjik, as reported by Katadata on Wednesday, May 16, 2024.
