Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight (Tuesday, August 26, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Tuesday (26/8/2025) at 19.24 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 11 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column observed was approximately 300 meters above the peak or 1,625 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate to thick intensity towards the east. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 33.63 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level II (Alert). Seismicity observations on August 26, 2025, from 00.00-23.59 WIT showed 122 eruption/explosive earthquakes with amplitudes of 14-28 millimeters and earthquake durations of 31-68 seconds.

Then, 3 times of emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 7-10 millimeters and earthquake durations of 30-43 seconds, and 26 harmonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-28 millimeters and earthquake durations of 31-118 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 2-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu''s active crater.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,817 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,326 times) while Mount Ibu erupted 2,130 times.
