Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Afternoon, Ash Column Height Around 1,500 Meters

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Sunday (August 24, 2025) at 11:47 AM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 24 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height was approximately 1,500 meters above the peak or 3,084 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be grey with thick intensity towards the southwest and west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 10.5 millimeters and a duration of 122 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia''s volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Seismicity observations on August 24, 2025, from 06:00-12:00 WITA showed 5 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.2-10.5 millimeters and earthquake durations of 102-130 seconds.

Subsequently, 8 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.2-29.6 millimeters and earthquake durations of 31-57 seconds, and 1 harmonic earthquake with an amplitude of 5.9 millimeters and an earthquake duration of 94 seconds occurred.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 6-kilometer radius from the center of the Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki eruption.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,773 volcano eruptions in all of Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,307 times) while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 480 times.
