Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Evening (Wednesday, January 8, 2025)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at 5:51 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 56 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed at approximately None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

The eruption was not visually observed. The eruption of Mount Semeru was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Semeru is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on January 8, 2025, from 00.00 to 23.59 WIB showed 43 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 10-22 millimeters and durations of 66-231 seconds.

Then, there were 3 guguran (rockfall) quakes with amplitudes of 6-8 mm and durations of 27-62 seconds, and 8 emission quakes with amplitudes of 4-8 millimeters and durations of 39-98 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, up to 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Outside this distance, the public should not conduct activities within 500 meters of the riverbank (river buffer zone) along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for the expansion of pyroclastic flows and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 170 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has experienced the most eruptions, with 118 eruptions.
