Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Morning, Volcanic Ash Reaches 600 Meters Above the Peak

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Sunday (December 8, 2024) at 10:21 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 89 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach 600 meters above the peak (1,925 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 70 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on December 8, 2024, from 00:00 to 06:00 WIT showed 24 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 17-28 millimeters and durations of 45-80 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 30 tremor events with amplitudes of 3-16 millimeters and durations of 23-52 seconds, and 8 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-16 millimeters and durations of 26-174 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia recorded 5,790 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions with 2,391.
