Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Afternoon, Ash Column Reaches 800 Meters Above the Peak

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Friday, February 21, 2025, at 12:32 WITA (West Indonesia Time). In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 4 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to reach 800 meters above the peak or 2,384 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 44.4 millimeters and a duration of 64 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismicity on February 21, 2025, from 06:00 to 12:00 WITA showed 7 volcanic tremor events with amplitudes of 2.9-29.6 millimeters and durations of 29-190 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 harmonic tremor event with an amplitude of 5.9 millimeters and a duration of 90 seconds, and 1 low-frequency earthquake with an amplitude of 22.2 millimeters and a duration of 51 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 5-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and in the southwest-north-northeast sector up to 6 kilometers.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,444 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (711 times), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 52 times.
