Mount Marapi Erupts on Thursday Morning, Status is Alert

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Thursday (March 26, 2026) at 08:28 WIB. In the last week, Mount Marapi has erupted 3 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column observed is around None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

No eruption visuals were observed. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 27 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Marapi is at Level II (Alert). Earthquake observations on March 26, 2026, from 00:00-23:59 WIB showed 1 explosion earthquake with an amplitude of 2.5 millimeters and a duration of 43 seconds.

Then, 2 non-harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2.5-2.7 millimeters and durations of 69-102 seconds, as well as 2 low-frequency earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.5-2.6 millimeters and durations of 24-39 seconds.

PVMBG advises residents around Mount Marapi and visitors/tourists and climbers not to enter and carry out activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the activity center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,150 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has the most eruptions (622 eruptions) while Mount Marapi has erupted 31 times.
