Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Morning, Ash Plume 500 Meters Above Peak

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Thursday (16/10/2025) at 06.59 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 20 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column was observed to be around 500 meters above the peak or 1,825 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 46.94 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level II (Alert). Seismicity observations on October 16, 2025, at 00.00-23.59 WIT showed 56 eruption/explosive earthquakes with amplitudes of 16-28 millimeters and earthquake durations of 31-73 seconds.

Then, 2 rockfall earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-6 mm and earthquake durations of 32-34 seconds, and 13 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 4-10 millimeters and earthquake durations of 35-42 seconds occurred.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a radius of 2.0 kilometers and a sectoral expansion of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 6,671 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,623 times) while Mount Ibu erupted 2,392 times.
