Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Afternoon, Ash Column Approximately 800 Meters High

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Monday (22/9/2025) at 11:51 AM WITA. In the past week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 21 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column reached 800 meters above the peak (2,384 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 10.5 millimeters and a duration of 93 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia''s volcanic activity report, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki''s activity level is at Level IV (Alert). Seismic observations on September 22, 2025, from 06:00-12:00 WITA, showed 10 eruption tremors/quakes with amplitudes of 4.4-44.4 millimeters and durations of 50-157 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 non-harmonic tremor with an amplitude of 3.7 millimeters and a duration of 87 seconds, and 1 low-frequency earthquake with an amplitude of 2.9 millimeters and a duration of 25 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to engage in any activities within a 6-kilometer radius and a 7-kilometer sector from the Southwest-Northeast of the Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki eruption center.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 6,265 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,472 times), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 583 times.
