Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts on Sunday Afternoon, Status Raised to Alert

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Sunday (18/8/2024) at 16:50 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 38 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be approximately 500 meters above the peak or 2,084 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with moderate intensity towards the southwest. The eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on August 18, 2024, from 06:00 to 12:00 WITA showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 19.24 millimeters and a duration of 1208 seconds.

Then, 1 tremor with an amplitude of 4.44 millimeters and a duration of 39 seconds, and 2 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2.22-2.96 millimeters and durations of 16-36 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the north-northeast sector and 5 kilometers in the northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,894 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,080 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 522 times.
