Mount Dukono Erupts Again This Afternoon, Eruption Height Approximately 500 Meters

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Friday, April 4, 2025, at 12:01 WIT. In the last week, Mount Dukono has erupted 7 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 500 meters above the peak (1,587 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the southeast. The eruption of Mount Dukono was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on April 4, 2025, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 39 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 6-34 millimeters and durations of 33.79-340.27 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 felt earthquake, scale III MMI, with an amplitude of 34 millimeters (S-P not observed) and a duration of 231.97 seconds, and 4 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 6-34 millimeters, S-P 17.52-41.45 seconds, and durations of 80.39-131.06 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 4-kilometer radius.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,598 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,205 eruptions), while Mount Dukono erupted 70 times.
