Mount Ibu Erupts on Tuesday Afternoon, Status Raised to Alert

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at 4:18 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 14 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 700 meters above the peak (2,025 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the east. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 45 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on March 25, 2025, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIT showed 37 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 11-28 millimeters and durations of 30-67 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 40 tremor events with amplitudes of 3-9 millimeters and durations of 17-62 seconds, and 4 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 48-198 millimeters and durations of 4-28 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,407 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,110 eruptions), while Mount Ibu erupted 940 times.
