Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupted Wednesday Morning; Status Remains on Alert

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at 7:37 AM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 11 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 600 meters above the peak or 2,184 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the north and northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 47.3 millimeters and a duration of 545 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on June 5, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WITA showed 5 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 37-47.3 millimeters and durations of 215-790 seconds.

Then, there was 1 puffing quake with an amplitude of 7.4 millimeters and a duration of 24 seconds, and 1 harmonic tremor with an amplitude of 7.4 millimeters and a duration of 55 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and a sectoral 3-kilometer radius in the North-Northeast direction and a 5-kilometer radius in the Northeast sector.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 894 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (361 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 150 times.
