Mount Dukono Erupts Again Tonight, Eruption Height Around 700 Meters

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Tuesday (August 19, 2025) at 6:42 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Dukono has erupted twice.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be around 700 meters above the peak or 1,787 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption of Mount Dukono was still ongoing when this report was made.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert). Seismicity observations on August 19, 2025, from 00:00-23:59 WIT showed 8 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 6-34 millimeters and durations of 41-80.53 seconds.

Subsequently, 2 felt earthquakes occurred, with scales of II to III MMI, amplitudes of 34 millimeters (S-P was not observed) and durations of 134.3-239.43 seconds, as well as 13 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 6-34 millimeters (S-P 13.03-43.14 seconds) and durations of 61.94-128.73 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities, climb, or approach Malupang Warirang Crater within a 4-kilometer radius.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,696 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,282 times) while Mount Dukono erupted 478 times.
