Warning! Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted again in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday, August 20, 2024)

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at 04:14 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 9 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 500 meters above the peak (2,084 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 5.9 millimeters and a duration of 258 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on August 20, 2024, from 18:00 to 23:59 WITA showed 3 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 5.1-7.4 millimeters and durations of 110-446 seconds.

Then, there were 4 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2.2-2.9 millimeters and durations of 34-281 seconds, and 2 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.2-5.1 millimeters and durations of 9-12 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the northeast sector, and 5 kilometers in the northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,934 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,088 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 531 times.
