Prevalence of Inadequate Food Consumption in Upper Mahakam River Decreases by 4.4% in the Last Year

Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the prevalence of undernourishment (PoU) in Mahakam Hulu Regency, East Kalimantan, was 13.82% in 2023.

This figure is down 4.4% from the previous year's 18.22%, while it has increased by 3.84% over the past five years.

The average PoU in Indonesia was 8.53% in 2023. This means that the PoU in Mahakam Hulu Regency is higher than the national average.

According to the National Food Agency (Bapanas), PoU is a condition where a person regularly consumes an insufficient amount of food to meet the energy needs for a normal, active, and healthy life. This indicator can be used as a tool to assess food and nutrition insecurity.

This means that the percentage of residents in Mahakam Hulu Regency who consume food but whose energy needs are insufficient does not reach 13.82% of the total population.

Compared to nine other regencies/cities in East Kalimantan Province, Mahakam Hulu Regency ranks ninth in terms of PoU. The area with the lowest PoU (highest ranking) is Bontang City (6.95%), and the highest (lowest ranking) is Penajam Paser Utara Regency (16.34%).
