Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again Today, Ash Height Reaches 500 Meters

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Thursday (4/9/2025) at 06:16 WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 4 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column reached 500 meters above the peak or 1,923 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to grey with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 32.2 millimeters and a duration of 52 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on September 4, 2025, from 00:00-06:00 WITA showed 52 eruption tremors with amplitudes of 6.6-33.3 millimeters and tremor durations of 46-51 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 56 exhalation tremors with amplitudes of 2.1-9.5 millimeters and tremor durations of 30-44 seconds, and 2 non-harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2.1-9.5 millimeters and tremor durations of 99-154 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok, as well as visitors/climbers/tourists, not to enter and not to carry out activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok''s activity, and to be aware of potential dangers from rockfalls/lava avalanches and pyroclastic clouds from the South and Southeast sectors, the West sector, and the Northeast sector of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,956 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,384 times), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 256 times.
