Warning! Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Morning (Tuesday, March 18, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at 09:45 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 12 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height was approximately 600 meters above the peak or 1,925 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 25 millimeters and a duration of 102 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on March 18, 2025, from 00:00 to 06:00 WIT showed 27 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 11-28 millimeters and durations of 26-57 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 41 tremor events with amplitudes of 2-9 millimeters and durations of 36-50 seconds, and 11 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 3-11 millimeters and durations of 44-166 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,271 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,038 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 914 times.
