Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Morning, Ash Column Reaches 700 Meters Above the Peak

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Thursday (29/8/2024) at 10:21 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 17 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height was approximately 700 meters above the peak or 2,284 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 5.9 millimeters and a duration of 252 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on August 29, 2024, from 00:00 to 06:00 WITA showed 2 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 14.06-14.8 millimeters and durations of 257-293 seconds.

Then, there were 3 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2.96-6.66 millimeters and durations of 21-193 seconds, and 1 harmonic tremor with an amplitude of 2.22 millimeters and a duration of 46 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the northeast sector and 5 kilometers in the northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 3,228 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,245 times), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 565 times.
