Yogyakarta's Gender Inequality Index Worsened in 2024

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the Gender Inequality Index (GII) in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) worsened in 2024.

The GII measures gender inequality across three dimensions: reproductive health, empowerment, and the labor market.

A low GII value indicates low inequality between men and women (better). Conversely, a high GII value indicates high inequality between men and women (worse).

In 2024, Yogyakarta's GII reached 0.163 on a scale of 0-1 points. This figure increased compared to 2023, indicating a worsening gender inequality.

In the reproductive health dimension, BPS measured the proportion of women aged 15-49 who gave birth outside health facilities (MTF) in the past two years, and the proportion of women aged 15-49 who gave birth to their first child before the age of 20 (MHPK20).

In 2024, Yogyakarta's MTF figure was 0 points, indicating that no women gave birth outside health facilities. However, the MHPK20 in Yogyakarta was 0.140 points, indicating that some women are still giving birth at a young age.

In the empowerment dimension, the percentage of female legislators in Yogyakarta is significantly lower (16.36%) than that of males (83.64%). There is also an education gap, where the proportion of males with upper secondary education and above reaches 53.72%, while females reach 48.98%.

Then, in the labor market dimension, the Male Labor Force Participation Rate (LFPR) in Yogyakarta is also higher (83.27%) than that of females (66.59%).
