East Java's Gender Inequality Index Improves in 2024

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the Gender Inequality Index (IKG) of East Java Province improved in 2024.

The IKG measures gender inequality across three dimensions: reproductive health, empowerment, and the labor market.

A lower IKG value indicates lower inequality between men and women (better). Conversely, a higher IKG value indicates higher inequality between men and women (worse).

In 2024, East Java's IKG reached 0.347 on a scale of 0-1 points. This figure is down compared to 2023 and is the lowest in the last six years.

In the reproductive health dimension, BPS measured the proportion of women aged 15-49 who gave birth outside health facilities (MTF) in the last two years, and the proportion of women aged 15-49 who gave birth to their first child before the age of 20 (MHPK20).

In 2024, East Java's MTF figure was 0.032 points, indicating that some women still give birth outside health facilities. East Java's MHPK20 was 0.247 points, indicating that some women are still giving birth at a young age.

In the empowerment dimension, the percentage of female legislators in East Java is still lower (20%) than that of males (80%). There is also an education gap, where the proportion of males with upper secondary education and above reaches 39.84%, while for females it is 32.24%.

Then, in the labor market dimension, the Male Labor Force Participation Rate (TPAK) in East Java is also higher (86.52%) than that of females (60.64%).
