According to Law Number 11 of 2010 concerning Cultural Heritage, cultural heritage is tangible cultural heritage in the form of objects, buildings, structures, sites, and areas.
As of June 26, 2025, the Indonesian Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) ) recorded 4,924 cultural heritage sites nationwide. This figure represents the total of cultural heritage objects, buildings, sites, structures, and areas.
According to the Cultural Heritage Law, cultural heritage objects are natural and/or man-made objects, movable or immovable, in the form of units or groups, or parts thereof, or remnants thereof, that are closely related to the culture and history of human development.
Cultural heritage buildings are structures made of natural or man-made objects to meet the needs of walled and/or unwalled, and roofed spaces.
Cultural heritage structures are structures made of natural and/or man-made objects to meet the needs of activity spaces that are integrated with nature, facilities, and infrastructure to accommodate human needs.
Cultural heritage sites are locations on land and/or in water containing cultural heritage objects, cultural heritage buildings, and/or cultural heritage structures as a result of human activities or evidence of past events.
A cultural heritage area is a geographical spatial unit that has two or more cultural heritage sites located close together and/or exhibiting distinctive spatial characteristics.
The following provinces are in the top 10 with the most cultural heritage sites in Indonesia as of June 26, 2025:
- Central Java: 982 cultural heritage sites
- Yogyakarta Special Region: 794 cultural heritage sites
- West Sumatra: 598 cultural heritage sites
- East Java: 369 cultural heritage sites
- West Java: 366 cultural heritage sites
- Jakarta: 222 cultural heritage sites
- Riau Islands: 207 cultural heritage sites
- Central Kalimantan: 193 cultural heritage sites
- Banten and South Sumatra: 176 cultural heritage sites each
- West Kalimantan: 133 cultural heritage sites
However, as of June 26, 2025, data on cultural heritage in South Papua Province, Papua Mountains Province, Central Papua Province, Southwest Papua Province, and West Papua Province were not available in the Kemendikbudristek report.
