East Java, Province with the Highest Number of Divorces Due to Gambling in 2024

According to data compiled by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) from the Supreme Court (MA), throughout 2024 there were 2,889 divorce cases in Indonesia caused by online gambling.

The highest number of divorces due to gambling was recorded in East Java, with 819 cases.

Other provinces with a significant number of similar cases include West Java (472 cases), Central Java (281 cases), Banten (166 cases), and Lampung (131 cases).

The number of divorce cases due to online gambling recorded by the Ministry of Religious Affairs is higher than that recorded by the MA, reaching 4,000 cases in 2024.

"Only around 1,000 [divorces due to gambling] in 2019. Our data shows an increase to around 4,000 divorces due to online gambling," said Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar in a press release late last year (20/11/2024).

In response to this situation, the government is taking various steps to protect the public from the social impact of online gambling, one of which is blocking accounts related to such activities.

"The law enforcement process that has been and will be carried out aims to save the public from the snare of online loans, narcotics, fraud, prostitution, and the destruction of families due to dependence on online gambling," said the Head of the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK), Ivan Yustiavandana, in a press release (1/5/2025).
