Many couples divorced due to arguments in 2024

According to data from the Supreme Court's Religious Court Agency compiled by the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), there were 394,608 divorces in Indonesia throughout 2024.

Of these, 85,652 cases were initiated by the husband (cerai talak), and 308,956 cases were initiated by the wife (cerai gugat).

In 2024, the majority of divorces in Indonesia were caused by continuous disputes and arguments, totaling 251,125 cases—almost 64% of the total national divorce cases.

The next most frequent causes of divorce were economic problems (100,198 cases), one party leaving their partner (31,265 cases), and domestic violence (KDRT) (7,256 cases).

Other causes included gambling (2,889 cases), intoxication (2,004 cases), imprisonment (1,335 cases), adultery (1,005 cases), and apostasy (1,000 cases).

Divorces were also triggered by polygamy (849 cases), drug use (436 cases), forced marriage (307 cases), and physical disability (252 cases).

By region, the highest number of divorces occurred in West Java with 88,842 cases, followed by East Java with 77,658 cases and Central Java with 64,569 cases.

The lowest number of divorces was recorded in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), with 485 cases throughout 2024.
