71% of Young Indonesians Unmarried by 2025, Marriage Trend Declining

According to a report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), in March 2025, there were 66.83 million young people or residents aged 16-30 years in Indonesia.

As many as 71.04% of them were unmarried, while only 27.92% were married in 2025.

Furthermore, over the last decade, the proportion of unmarried young people has increased, while the proportion of those who are married has decreased, as shown in the graph.

"The trends in the percentage of married and unmarried youth are contradictory," wrote BPS in its report Indonesian Youth Statistics 2025.

According to BPS, the decline in the marriage trend among Indonesian youth is partly influenced by legal changes.

Previously, based on Law No. 1 of 1974, the minimum age for marriage was 19 years for males and 16 years for females.

This regulation was later amended by Law No. 16 of 2019, which set the minimum age for marriage at 19 years for both males and females.

BPS also mentioned other factors, such as expanding opportunities for further education and career development, as well as reduced social pressure influencing young people's decisions to postpone marriage.
