Mount Semeru Erupts Today, Status Raised to Alert

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Monday, June 10, 2024, at 09:50 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 8 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the visual eruption was not observed. The eruption of Mount Semeru is still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Siaga/Alert). Seismic observations from June 10, 2024, 00:00-06:00 WIB, showed 47 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 14-22 millimeters and durations of 67-157 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 15 rockfall quakes with amplitudes of 2-10 mm and durations of 49-146 seconds, and 4 emission quakes with amplitudes of 8 millimeters and durations of 45-59 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, up to 13 kilometers from the summit (eruption center). Outside this distance, the public should not engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbank (river buffer zone) along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for pyroclastic flow and lahar flows extending up to 17 kilometers from the summit.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 978 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has experienced the most eruptions, with 402 recorded events.
