Most Indonesian women marry between the ages of 19 and 24.

Most Indonesian women have their first marriage between the ages of 19 and 24. Based on the results of the 2020 National Socioeconomic Survey (SUSENAS), 48.59% of women in the country married for the first time at that age.

At this age, women are considered adults and meet the legal marriage age according to applicable laws.

Next, 26.55% of Indonesian women had their first marriage between the ages of 16 and 18. Furthermore, 16.67% of women first married at age 25 or older, and 8.19% married for the first time at a relatively young age, namely 7-15 years old.

Law Number 16 of 2019 concerning Amendments to Law Number 1 of 1974 concerning Marriage states that marriage is only permitted if both the man and woman are 19 years of age or older.

The change to the minimum marriage age for women to 19 years (considered an adult) is not without reason. Child marriage often has negative impacts on a child's development. Early marriage often leads to the unmet basic rights of the child, such as protection from violence, civil rights, health rights, education rights, and social rights.
