Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Morning (Monday, April 13, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Monday (April 13, 2026) at 05:47 WIB. In the past week, Mount Semeru erupted only once.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 500 meters above the peak (4,176 meters above sea level).

The observed ash column was white to gray in color with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 128 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Semeru is at Level III (Alert). Earthquake observations on April 13, 2026 from 18:00 to 23:59 WIB showed 24 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 10-23 millimeters and durations of 58-157 seconds.

Then, 9 collapse earthquakes with amplitudes of 1-2 mm and durations of 36-67 seconds, as well as 4 emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 4-8 millimeters and durations of 55-74 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activities in the southeast sector along the Besuk Kobokan, within 13 kilometers of the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, residents should avoid activities within 500 meters of the riverbanks along the Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for being affected by expanding hot clouds and lahar flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,434 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions with 776 events.
