Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Afternoon (Monday, January 26, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Monday (1/26/2026) at 11:07 AM Western Indonesian Time. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 2 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach None meters above the peak or None meters above sea level.

The visual eruption was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 16 millimeters and a duration of 124 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismicity observations on January 26, 2026, from 00:00-06:00 WIB, showed 25 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 15-22 millimeters and earthquake durations of 64-157 seconds.

Furthermore, 7 times of emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-6 millimeters and earthquake durations of 47-106 seconds, as well as 2 harmonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 1-2 millimeters and earthquake durations of 376-927 seconds occurred.

PVMBG urges against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, people should not engage in activities within 500 meters from the riverbanks along Besuk Kobokan, as there is a potential for hot cloud expansion and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 341 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions, with 184 times.
