The UK-based charity, Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), has released a list of the most generous countries in its *World Giving Index 2023* report.
The assessment is based on a survey involving 147,186 respondents from 142 countries in 2022.
The behavioral aspects surveyed and serving as the main assessment indicators are: helping strangers, donating money to charity, and volunteering.
Positive responses in this survey were then averaged per country and formulated into an index score on a scale of 0-100.
A high score reflects a large number of people in a country involved in charitable activities, and vice versa.
Using this assessment method, Indonesia achieved a score of 68 out of 100 points this year, the highest among the 142 countries surveyed.
Indonesia has also been recorded as the most generous country according to this index for six consecutive years.
Breaking down the indicators, in 2023 Indonesia achieved 61% in helping strangers, 82% in monetary donations, and 61% in willingness to volunteer.
Below Indonesia is Ukraine with an index score of 62 points. According to CAF's findings, Ukrainian citizens remain active in humanitarian activities despite being in the midst of war.
In the category of helping strangers, Ukraine achieved 78%, then 70% in monetary donations, and 37% in volunteering.
Kenya ranks third with a score of 60 points. This African country achieved the highest rating in the aspect of helping strangers at 76%, followed by monetary donations at 53%, and volunteering at 51%.
