Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight, Eruption Height Approximately 600 Meters

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at 00:32 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 5 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 600 meters above the peak or 1,925 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 81 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on August 20, 2024, from 12:00 to 18:00 WIT showed 13 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 17-28 millimeters and durations of 40-129 seconds.

Then, there were 19 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2-35 millimeters and durations of 20-48 seconds, and 3 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 5-9 millimeters and durations of 32-105 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.
