A large-scale war between Israel and Palestine erupted in early October 2023.
This war began with an attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which bombarded Israeli territory with rockets on Saturday, October 7, 2023. On Sunday, October 8, 2023, Israel declared war and launched retaliatory attacks.
According to data compiled by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), between October 7 and 12, 2023, the Israel-Palestine war resulted in approximately 2,750 deaths and 10,159 injuries on both sides.
"Israeli air, sea, and ground bombardments have continued and intensified across the Gaza Strip for six consecutive days," OCHA stated in its report on Thursday, October 12, 2023.
"Palestinian armed groups in Gaza also continued to fire rockets into Israeli population centers, although with lower intensity than in previous days," it continued.
Based on location, the majority of Palestinian casualties were in Gaza: 1,417 deaths and 6,268 injuries. In the West Bank, there were 33 deaths and 500 injuries.
On the other hand, Israeli casualties reached 1,300 deaths and 3,391 injuries.
The actual number of casualties may be higher than recorded. According to OCHA, many victims are trapped under rubble in various areas, but medical and civil defense teams cannot access these areas due to lack of protection, insufficient equipment, and severely damaged roads.
OCHA also noted that the number of displaced persons due to the war continues to rise, reaching 423,000 by Thursday, October 12, 2023.
Approximately 64% of the displaced are sheltering in United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) shelters, with the remainder scattered in various locations.
"It is estimated that more than 153,000 displaced persons, whose homes have been destroyed or damaged, or who have left their homes out of fear, are staying with relatives and neighbors, as well as in other public facilities," OCHA stated.
They also reported that Gaza has experienced a complete power outage, putting health, water, and sanitation services on the brink of collapse.
The outage occurred after Israel stopped the supply of electricity and fuel to Gaza on October 8, 2023, which subsequently led to the depletion of fuel reserves for Gaza's power plants.
