Mount Ibu Erupts Early Wednesday Morning, Status Raised to Highest Alert Level

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at 04.14 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 4 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to reach 5,000 meters above the peak or 6,325 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 362 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level IV (Alert). Seismic observations on June 5, 2024, from 18.00 to 23.59 WIT showed 38 times of emission quakes with amplitudes of 2-14 millimeters and durations of 14-62 seconds.

Then, there were 2 harmonic tremors with an amplitude of 2 millimeters and durations of 26-37 seconds, and 160 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-12 millimeters and durations of 4-16 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 7 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 893 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (361 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 106 times.
