The Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil) of the Ministry of Home Affairs recorded Riau's population at 6.45 million in June 2021. Of this number, 3.3 million (51.14%) were male and 3.15 million (48.86%) were female.
Based on age group, 4.41 million (68.27%) of Riau's population were in the productive age group (15-64 years). The productive age is the age at which a person can still work and produce. Therefore, the large number of people in the productive age group can be an important asset to accelerate development in the region.
There were also 2.05 million (31.73%) of Riau's population in the unproductive age group. This comprises 1.82 million (28.22%) in the non-productive age group (0-14 years) and 226,580 (3.51%) in the unproductive age group (65 years and over).
Given the large number of people in the productive age group, Riau's dependency ratio is 46.47%. This means that for every 100 people of productive age, there are 47 dependents in the unproductive age group.
Riau is one of the provinces in Sumatra with an area of 87,023 square kilometers, divided into 10 regencies and 2 cities. As of the end of June 2021, there were 1.89 million registered households recorded by Dukcapil.
