Distribution of Indonesia's Population in H2 2025, Most on the Java Island

According to data from the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Ditjen Dukcapil), the population of Indonesia reached 288,315,089 people in the second semester of 2025.

"Compared to the first semester of 2025, the number of Indonesian residents increased by approximately 1.6 million," said Director General of Dukcapil Teguh Setyabudi at the 2025 Second Population Data Release event in Jakarta on Thursday (12/3/2026).

In the second semester of 2025, the number of male Indonesian residents reached 145,498,092, and female residents reached 142,816,997.

When looking at the distribution, Indonesians are concentrated on the island of Java, with a proportion reaching 55.81% of the total population.

"It's natural that the economic activity is in Java Island, because more than half of Indonesia's population lives on Java Island," said Teguh.

Then, 21.88% of Indonesian residents are located on Sumatra Island, 7.35% in Sulawesi, 6.21% in Kalimantan, and 5.55% in Bali and Nusa Tenggara.

Meanwhile, the proportion of Indonesian residents in Papua is only 2.01% and in Maluku it's 1.18%.
