Warning! Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Afternoon (Monday, March 9, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Monday (March 9, 2026) at 5:20 PM WIB. In the past week, Mount Semeru has erupted 11 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column observed was around None meters above the peak or None meters above sea level.

No visual eruption was observed. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 23 millimeters and a duration of 168 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Semeru is at Level III (Alert). Earthquake observations on March 9, 2026 from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIB showed 18 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 12-23 millimeters and durations of 69-130 seconds.

Then, 4 emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 5-8 millimeters and durations of 49-53 seconds, as well as 1 distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 30 millimeters, s-p 13 seconds, and a duration of 51 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, within 13 kilometers of the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, residents should avoid activities within 500 meters of the riverbanks along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for being affected by expanding hot clouds and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

In 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 923 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has the most eruptions with 474 events.
