Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Evening (Sunday, September 15, 2024)

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Sunday (September 15, 2024) at 3:37 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 31 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 700 meters above the peak or 2,284 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west and northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 7.4 millimeters and a duration of 213 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on September 15, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WITA showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 17 millimeters and a duration of 399 seconds.

Then, 1 puffing earthquake with an amplitude of 4.4 millimeters and a duration of 24 seconds, and 1 shallow volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 2.2 millimeters and a duration of 13 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the northeast sector and 5 kilometers in the northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 3,704 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,500 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 653 times.
