Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Early Sunday Morning, Status Remains on Alert

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at 02:20 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 16 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the visual eruption was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 19.2 millimeters and a duration of 184 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on June 2, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WITA showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 29.6 millimeters and a duration of 142 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 3 puffing earthquakes with amplitudes of 3.7-22 millimeters and durations of 16-38 seconds, and 41 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 4.4-14.8 millimeters and durations of 7-12 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, and a sectoral 3-kilometer radius in the North-Northeast direction and a 5-kilometer radius in the Northeast sector.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 863 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (349 times), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 136 times.
