Mount Ibu Erupts Again Early This Morning, Eruption Height Around 500 Meters

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Tuesday (December 9, 2025) at 04.44 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 7 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be around 500 meters above the peak or 1,825 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate intensity towards the southeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 24 millimeters and a duration of 61 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismicity observations on December 9, 2025, at 00.00-23.59 WIT showed 104 eruption tremors/earthquakes with amplitudes of 15-28 millimeters and tremor durations of 47-81 seconds.

Followed by 8 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 3-9 millimeters and durations of 32-147 seconds, and 94 low-frequency earthquakes with amplitudes of 5-12 millimeters and durations of 17-29 seconds.

PVMBG urged the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 2-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 7,266 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,987 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 2,613 times.
