Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupted Early Saturday, Activity Level at Alert

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Saturday (August 2, 2025) at 01:05 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted twice.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column observed reached 18,000 meters above the peak (19,584 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be grey to black with thick intensity towards the southwest, west, and northwest. The eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki was still ongoing when this report was made.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level IV (Alert). Seismic observations on August 2, 2025, from 18:00-23:59 WITA showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 47.3 millimeters and a duration of 250 seconds.

Subsequently, 1 exhalation earthquake with an amplitude of 7.4 millimeters and a duration of 55 seconds, and 15 low-frequency earthquakes with amplitudes of 14.8-29.6 millimeters and durations of 20-28 seconds occurred.

PVMBG urged the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 6-kilometer radius and a 7-kilometer sectoral area from the southwest to the northeast of the Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki eruption center.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,419 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java erupted the most (2,175 times), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 448 times.
