Warning! Mount Semeru Erupts Again Tonight (Friday, May 17, 2024)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Friday, May 17, 2024, at 7:26 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 19 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, no visual eruption was observed. The eruption of Mount Semeru is still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on May 17, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WIB showed 12 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 11-23 millimeters and durations of 59-119 seconds. There was also 1 puffing quake with an amplitude of 3 millimeters and a duration of 32 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along the Besuk Kobokan river, up to 13 kilometers from the summit (eruption center). Outside this distance, the public should not engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbank (river buffer zone) along the Besuk Kobokan river due to the potential for the expansion of pyroclastic flows and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the summit.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 710 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has experienced the most eruptions, with 253 recorded events.
