West Java Has the Highest Number of Motor Vehicle Theft Cases in Indonesia

In 2015, the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) recorded no less than 38,000 cases of motor vehicle theft (curanmor) throughout Indonesia. This figure shows a downward trend compared to previous years, which saw more than 40,000 cases. West Java had the highest number of curanmor incidents in Indonesia, with 5,000 cases. North Sumatra followed with 4,900 cases.

Motor vehicle theft in Indonesia remains a persistent problem. Curanmor gangs operate systematically. They don't act alone, but in networks and groups. This means the perpetrators have networks to receive or fence their stolen goods.

Curanmor perpetrators are becoming increasingly violent and are not hesitant to injure or even kill victims with sharp weapons to secure their loot or escape. They employ various methods, from using L-shaped wrenches and chemical fluids to damage locks, to cornering victims and forcefully demanding their vehicles.
